Massey Truck Engineering is one of the UK’s leading specialist bodybuilders for trucks and heavy goods vehicles. Based in Sheffield, and formerly part of the Unilever empire, MTE has been operating for more than 40 years. Massey Truck Engineering manufacture most of the steel components in-house to ensure
quality and to keep control of all building processes.
MTE supply bespoke bodywork solutions to organisations across the UK. Customers from commercial sectors, construction, utility and more receive a quality and extensive service that is based on customer consultation and understanding.
MTE won a contract with the Falklands Defence Force to build a custom-made vehicle. They were able to supply and fabricate this vehicle to all customer requirements and specifications but were looking for another organisation to create a bespoke cover. It was imperative that this cover met all the needs of the vehicle and complied with NATO specifications.
Designated as an Urgent Operational requirement by both the client and the end-user, Massey Truck Engineering called for a fast turnaround for this project whilst ensuring the extremely high standards requested by the Falklands Defence Force were adhered to.
Specialised Canvas has a long-term relationship with Massey Truck Engineering, providing a range of custom-designed solutions, and has a history of working with other clients in the armed services. Our team of experienced designers used 3D CAD software and Rhino programmes as part of a timely process to create an accurate and intricate design for the truck cover. Rather than using paper and textile patterns, the use of digital tools meant the project could be completed more quickly, and more sustainably.
The custom-made covering is fire retardant and has an infrared reflective coating. The PVC material is UV stable, which is critical when being used in the location the vehicle will be serving in. The cowling is welded for water tightness and durability, factors that are paramount for the safety and comfort of troops deployed inside the vehicle.
The Specialised Canvas team also supply a range of high-quality buckles, reinforcements, and pneumatically pressed eyelets to provide added longevity for the cover. Wear strips and reinforcement patches add to the strength and durability of the product whilst a ‘supply and fit’ service reassures the customer of any concerns about serviceability.
